24 Dec Recipe for A Well Lived Life
What makes life livable and worth our time on this planet? This simple question has plagued every human being, who has ever walked the face of this earth, since times immemorial. From the sages and soothsayers of the ancient times to the proponents of new age spirituality, countless explanations have been doled out, time and again, to the seekers of the ultimate truth. With the advent of modern day spirituality a lot of flexibility and pragmatism has found its way into the old, rigid and dogmatic spiritual system of the ancient and medieval times.
Today the internet is bombarded with articles on spiritual growth, enlightenment, empowerment and to crown all, fantastic inspirational talks by new age speakers. Despite having easy access to the unimaginably valuable resources, made possible by the modern technology, how many have actually been able to change the course of their lives? How many, even after attending an exceedingly motivational and eye-opening seminar, have resolved to ‘be the change they want to see in the world’? Very few, I suppose. Why does this happen? Considering the resources available in the present era and our ability to tap into these resources, why hasn’t the majority of human race understood the importance of making every day of their existence worth living? Why hasn’t it yet dawned on the human population that the secret of reaching the maximum potential is to live intensely and to stop living under the illusion that they are not going anywhere for a long time.
So what makes a life worth living? Here are some of the essential components of a well lived life –
Step # 1 – Find a Purpose
Most people are already aware of the benefits of living a life to the fullest. They have the desire, inclination and the resources but, sadly enough, not the kind of ‘energy’ to make things happen. Even when they have the energy, they don’t feel adequately motivated to do what needs to be done, to reach their fullest potential in one lifetime. Motivation is like a gas pedal, which when pushed, sets the vehicle in motion. The question is – where does the fuel come from? Undoubtedly from ‘life purpose’. Having a purpose in life acts like a fuel injector and makes it easier for you to drive through harsh terrains. If you’re lucky enough you might, on the way, happen to see some of the most scenic locations that you might have never known to exist, if you hadn’t opted to sit behind the wheel. The first step, therefore, is to have a purpose in life and take action to fulfill it. If life doesn’t give you a purpose by default, try to find one. There are so many out there who need your help. Turning someone’s life around could make your own life meaningful and worth living. Your purpose will become your driving force.
Step # 2 – Love and Live Intensely
You have to have the ability to love someone so intensely that the love itself becomes bigger than ‘You’. It should be so strong an emotion that it dissolves your identity and your ego completely. Consider yourself fortunate if you experience love of that big a magnitude in one lifetime. Experiencing love in a pure and selfless form makes your energy unbridled and unobstructed and that becomes an important milestone in your personal growth. It has the potential to propel you to higher realms without much effort. On the same note, living life with full intensity activates the dormant life force in you and helps you blossom in ways that you would have possibly never imagined. The key to a happy and well lived life is to live every day as if it were your last day on this planet. Ask yourself what would you do today if there is no tomorrow in your life. When you find the answer, don’t wait. Get going. Clock is ticking.
Step # 3 – Live without Fear
Now comes the tricky part. It’s almost impossible to live life intensely if you have deep seated fears or insecurities arising either from past experiences or from possible future events, which might not even occur. Unless you are liberated from the shackles of fear, how can you expect to live life intensely? I’m aware that you have heard this a million times but you’re still not able to free yourself from unexplained fears, no matter how hard you try. What’s the way out then? Here’s the answer. All fears are conceived in the mind. Fear is simply your mind’s response to some of your unpleasant life situations. Human mind has an inherent ability to interpret and draw inferences. Doesn’t mean it’s right all the time. You have to come to a realization that you’re bigger than your mind and you have the ability to control and put a leash on it. Mind is just a tool for survival in this world. Don’t turn it into an obstacle. The only way to free yourself from these baseless fears is to distance yourself from your mind and realize that whatever happened in the past happened for a reason; it contributed to your spiritual growth and inner strength. You needed it, whether you agree or not. If you want to succeed in life, you have to stop watching the waves from a safe distance for the fear of getting drowned. Taking a plunge is the only way to ride over the waves and get to the other side. Feeling safe is not enough. It won’t get you any closer to your goals.
Step # 4 – Live Consciously – Do Things for the Right Reason
Sadly, most people live their lives not being conscious of why they do what they do. Their actions are simply based on their past experiences, social conditioning and impulsive behavior. They keep doing things for all the wrong reasons, and as a result, invite misery in their lives. Ever heard someone say, “I married him because he felt safe,” or “I took up this job because I had nothing else to do” or even better, “ I want to become a psychic because I want to know if my boy friend is cheating on me”. Gosh! When will our actions stem from conscious awareness and not just from a stupid fantasy or from fear of the unfamiliar? When will we stop taking our limited time on this planet for granted? Focus on things that are really worth your time and effort.
How many people, despite knowing the benefits, are able to live in the moment? They are either stuck in the past or in the future. The only way to break the age old behavioral patterns is to re-wire the brain, and that is possible only by creating a distance between the physical and ethereal self. Distancing yourself from the mind will bring you one step closer to realizing that you are not just a physical body but a part of the boundless and seamless cosmic energy. You are in this physical body only to experience life in a way that will help you in your spiritual growth. It’s only in this realm that you can learn life lessons (more often the hard way) and fulfill your ‘soul’s purpose’ in the least amount of time.
Step # 5 – Feel the Pain Intensely
Don’t be afraid of pain. Don’t numb it with liquor or pills. It’s only during the most agonizing and trying times, you experience exponential inner growth. You might not realize it until after the difficult time is over but when you do, you can easily connect the dots. Everything happens for a reason. It’s very essential to experience and feel intensely every emotion in life, be it joy or sorrow. You should have the ability to laugh like no one’s watching you, and cry till you have no more tears to shed. Once you live through pain and feel it intensely, it’s job is done. It never comes back to torment you. Does it mean that your life is going to be perfect after you had your share of pain? No, but your response to a painful situation will not be the same again. You will be much wiser, calmer and stronger than ever before. Doesn’t that bring you one step closer to happiness? Don’t take my word for it. Try it. 🙂
